In the summer of 1966, the city of Santa Monica, California, became the venue for the most important international chess event held in the USA. UU. In the last 70 years.

Ten of the world's greatest masters were invited: each had been the national champion of his country; Each had competed in one of the qualifying rounds for the world championship; One was the current champion of the world, and two others would face, six years later, in Reykjavík.

All of them gathered here to compete for the Second Piatigorsky Cup. It is understandable, therefore, that the tournament was exceptionally hard, and that some of the most exciting, innovative and dramatic games of the post-war era were produced.

Some were spectacular, such as the elegant lady sacrifice used by Larsen to defeat Petrosian; Others consisted of positional fights of tremendous complexity (Fischer-Spassky, round 8), or resolved with the onset of overwhelming attacks (Fischer-Najdorf, round 16).

If only the 90 games of this historic tournament were presented, it would undoubtedly be a very important document for chess. But, in addition, the book in his hands contains an element that makes it unique in literature in chess. Superb comments from all games!

All games are commented by at least one of the contestants and most of them by both, who worked independently at the express request of the tournament organization.

Each player explains the course of their thoughts and the reasons for their decisions, and the reader gets a fascinating glimpse of the clash between two acute minds absorbed in the concrete problems that appear on the chessboard, with the ticking clock ticking in the distance.

Despite the passage of time, the quality of the comments is imperishable. The Spanish edition arrives on the 50th anniversary of this impressive tournament. "Probably the best tournament book ever written" (David Levy)
